JANUARY 15, 2022

1-Day Workshop with
FRANK ZAMPARDI

Lighthouse View by Frank Zampardi

DESIGN AND COMPOSITION MADE EASY

Are you frustrated with not knowing what to do next in your drawing or painting? Are you just making a literal translation of your reference material that lacks your expression and personality? Do you know how to create focal points and use color. You know something’s not right but don’t what it is? If you want the answers and solutions to these questions and more, this class will show you the way.

The class focuses on the design elements and principles and their applications in creating original art. The elements are the “building blocks” used in successful compositions and the principles are how they are arranged.

Students will learn a “repeatable” process on how to arrange the elements using design principles in various compositional formats. Each discussed element, principle and format will be executed in small scale designs with a final larger piece to follow.

Time – 9AM – 4 PM with break for lunch
Location – Whispering Pines Park Recreation Bldg

FEBRUARY 12-13, 2022

2-Day Workshop with
KATHY DURDIN

Satisfied by Kathy Durdin

LOOSENING UP AND
SEEING COLOR EVERYWHERE

Do you find yourself picking up those small brushes too soon? Do you wish you could see more and different colors in your images? Do some colors scare you? Do you always intend to loose some edges but then find your finished paintings very tight?

Attendees will work on expanding their color palette and then applying what they learn to working from photographs.

A good drawing is the critical foundation to any painting. For example, in a portrait, a viewer has an expectation of facial structure; differences from that expectation impact how the viewer sees the work. In a landscape or still life, the viewer has expectations of perspective. With a good drawing, the artist can be creative with other techniques.

Attendees will work on creating focus, simplifying, and using the photograph as a starting point to explore color and lose edges. We will work on finding centers of interest and focusing our detail in the area of the center of interest.
We will also work on creating color unity, painting large areas of light and dark, creating backgrounds and losing edges and using color to create interest and emotion.

Color creates emotion and can focus the viewer. Deconstructed color and unexpected colors excite and engage the viewer. Attendees will explore color properties — mixing colors to maintain clarity, using complementary colors to focus and create excitement, and exploring colors in highlights and shadows.

Attendees will apply what they have learned about drawing and color and work from their photograph. We will explore what makes a good photograph to work from and how to crop the photograph to create interest and emotion for the viewer. We will also work on composition and discuss improving our composition.

While Kathy may demo a portrait or figurative work, the attendees may also paint subjects other than portraits.
